SELF-CARE TIPS FROM 6 LOCAL BOSS BABES

Happy Easter Sunday all! The weather was so beautiful that I spent it at the park by releasing stress and inhaling fresh air, listening to birds chirping, and meditating, oh it was amazing! Self-Care is so important so make sure to listen to your body when you’re feeling stuck or in a weird mood. Some of the things I’ve been doing are creating Tik Tok videos to show off my creativity with fashion looks, dance challenges and being funny in general.

I’ve also taken the time to look into some online classes, working out, meditation, and binging on shows…the list goes on aha. Are you bored or wanting to find new ways to explore your creativity? I reached out to six local boss babes on 5 self-care tips they currently are doing that may benefit you. Keep on reading to learn more about them!

LEARN 5 SELF-CARE TIPS FROM 6 LOCAL BABES

1. HAYLEY SEGAR

For me, during this time of isolation/social distancing, it has been all about doing the things that make me feel ‘caught-up’…not only with life, but with myself. That, to me, is self-care. I’m industrious by nature, so this time has been all about balancing productivity with activities that make me feel relaxed.

1) Doing the things I have put off- When we’re busy, it’s easy to put off the items on our to-do list that are less enjoyable. However, given this more relaxed daily schedule, I have found it more manageable to do things that aren’t as ‘fun’ (I’m looking at you, tax prep), because I am able to sandwich these activities in between something more relaxing; like a nice long shower or binging a good TV show. Checking these tedious activities off my list is a massive weight off my shoulders, which feels great.

2) Decluttering – Given that I’m quite literally spending all of my time at home, I started to analyze certain spaces in my apartment that needed to be de-cluttered and/or rearranged. For me, this not only makes my space look better but also feel better.

3) Creating a zen zone – I have been using my SkyLite (a starry sky projector, so cool) and Himalayan salt lamp a lot when I am unwinding and trying to take time to myself. Creating an ambient space that signals my brain to chill has been incredibly helpful.

4) Comfort food – The food that I used to reserve for rainy days (dairy-free ice cream and mac and cheese!) are now being kept on-hand for mood boosters. Never underestimate the power of comfort food!

5) Getting ready in the morning – I started working from home last year – admittedly, I wasn’t immediately the best with getting myself fully ready when I got up in the morning before I started my workday. During this time of social distancing, though, I noticed it helped me feel far more put-together and “normal” to get up and immediately put an outfit on, avoiding sitting in my PJs at my desk!

We all feel the frustration of our current circumstances, however, as we all know, it is for the greater good. Finding new ways to feel more comfort and peace during this time is key. Sending everyone well wishes!

2. VANESSA SAMUEL

Hi ladies and gents of P&P! My name is Vanessa and I met Neelab during fashion week in 2017. I am an Electrical Engineer and a fashion writer. I am like many people and enjoy going out for a good brunch! During this quarantine life, I’ve been trying new things and really putting myself first during this time. My self-care tips are below.

1) Meditate or read something spiritual every morning. For me, I like to read a chapter of the Bible every day to help me get off to a good start with my day. Add coffee or tea to this time and it becomes a special time during the day.

2) It’s likely you’ve been using one part of your brain. Especially if you’re working from home. It can be easy to just want to watch TV after a long day of work but that can add to the quarantine slug. One way to start using different parts of your brain is to learn a new instrument or to paint or dive into arts and crafts. Try learning a new TIK TOK dance or a new exercise routine! It’s likely that while you’re WHF you’ve been taking in a lot of information so it’s time to release some energy and endorphins.

3) Skin care! Oooohhhh I love a good skin care routine. While you are at home take the time to try out different skincare products. I’m currently on a 12 step beauty routine and I love seeing how the lack of wearing makeup, combined with my skincare routine and drinking water has been making my skin GLOW!

4) Since we have a little bit more time on our hands and are not going anywhere, take the time to do the things you’ve wanted to do. I’m sure you’ve heard this by now but the last thing you would want is to come out of this time with regrets. Regret that you didn’t try that or try this or start school or something. Take a few minutes to write down a couple of things you want to accomplish during this time. Is it applying to med school? Taking an intro course? Learning a new skill? All of these things can tie into how you will feel about yourself AFTER this is over. Maybe you’re so busy outside of this that you really do just want a break and time of rest and that’s ok too!

5) Keep in contact with people! This is BEYOND important for your mental health. If you’re in an apartment alone, the last thing you need to be is lonely all the time. We need a personal connection and although we are stuck inside, we can still connect with one another. Churches around the world have all gone online and many times they have things called Connect Groups where you can interact with other people. If you’re feeling lonely reach out to people, whether it’s on Instagram (I met one of my best friends on there!), or another app, or even people you already know! Heck! Reach out to me or any of the bloggers on this post! We can all get through this together and you don’t have to be lonely through it!

3. SHEILA RODRIGUEZ

Glam By Shey is a fashion and beauty expert/blogger in Westchester. See below her 5 self-care tips:

1) Mental Breaks- One of the most important things I am doing to help myself stay calm during this time is taking mental breaks. Throughout the day I take breaks from social media and the news! Limiting the amount of information/news I consume helps me be a better state of mind and mood. I do this by taking a walk around my neighborhood while listening to my favorite music, organizing and decluttering my home while listening to a podcast or immersing myself in a good book! Another way I take a long mental break, is by learning something new! Right now, I am taking a course on marketing. I have always wanted to learn more about marketing but never had the time until now.

2) Healthy Snacks- Eating right has always been an important part of my self-care, what I eat affects the way I FEEL. Lately, I have been snacking more than usual, so I try to make most of my snacks as healthy as possible. I like to cut up raw veggies, like cucumber, celery or cauliflower and eat them with hummus or veggie dip. I have been into pineapple juice lately, enough though it’s technically a snack it is filing and it has a lot of health benefits.

3) Working Out- Keeping my body moving is also essential to taking care of myself. Before all this I was trying to get into a habit of waking up earlier and working out at 6:00 am! Nowadays, it can be a bit channeling to find motivation and harder to workout since the gyms are closed. But I get creative and finds ways to move my body, like playing an old work out video or tuning into live streaming workouts. I try to be active every day, even if it’s a 30-minute walk around my neighborhood.

4) Staying Connected- Checking in with friends and family is in a way part of my self-care. I miss going out with them and know that will happen sometime in the future. In the meantime, I stay connected by video chatting, checking in to talk about how they are feeling and planning for the future. Staying in touch and sharing our experiences makes things seem somewhat normal for now.

5) Getting Glam- Putting on makeup for me is a way of self-care. Applying my makeup is like therapy for me. Even though I am not going out anywhere there is something about putting on a lipstick and mascara that just makes my day. I especially do this when I hop on a video conference, putting my best self forward makes the interaction that more complete.

4. JENNA NEDWICK

Hi! My name is Jenna and I am a fashion blogger who lives off of pizza, sushi, and tacos. My blog is a space for me to share my love for fashion, travel and of course…food! Below are a 5 self care tips that I try to incorporate in my life every day. Hope you enjoy!

1) Take a Hot Bath- I can’t lie…I take hot baths on the reg. LITERALLY every day. If I am ever stressed out or my anxiety is through the roof, I immediately take a bath. Submerging in water calms your nerves and improves your mood. I instantly feel 100% better/happier after taking a bath. I’ve also read that taking a hot bath can kill bacteria and improve your immunity. It relieves symptoms of the cold/flu which can definitely be helpful right now given the current situation that we’re in. So go grab your favorite bath bomb, turn on some relaxing music, and light a candle. You’ll thank me later!

2) Read a Book- I was never really a book worm until now. I just finished reading “Girl Wash Your Face” and I highly recommend it to every single girl in the world. It’s a tough-love advice book written by a woman who’s been through it all. Definitely a good quarantine read if anyone needs a boost of self-confidence. Getting lost in a story right now will also help you step away from reality for a bit. Reading a book in a nice hot bath is a major PLUS too!

3) Pick up a New Hobby- Since we have a lot of time on our hands now, I encourage you to pick up a new hobby. It can be anything from learning how to cook to teaching yourself a new language. The world is your oyster. Mine is blogging. Although I’ve been blogging for about a year now, it was always the last thing on my to-do list. Now, it’s the first! Picking up a new hobby will keep your mind engaged and get your creative juices flowing.

4) FaceTime with Family/Friends- This one is a must for me every day. I am such a homebody and family person that going this long without seeing my parents/siblings/friends is torture. I’ll be honest, at the beginning of this quarantine, I cried every single day. I missed my parents so much and the thought of not being able to see them killed me. I know I’m not the only one in this situation and everyone is going through it too but it still sucks. So FaceTime will have to do for now…

5) Go for a Walk- Sometimes you need to just put on your shoes and go. Literally anywhere. The other day I was so anxious and overwhelmed that I just put on my running sneakers and walked out the door. I ran/walked 6 miles that day and kept my social distance of course. My mood changed drastically and I felt so much better about myself. It’s really important that you go outside and get some fresh air while keeping your distance during this time. You don’t want to be cooped up inside all day. I highly recommend going for a walk!

5. ALESSA PIRES

Why hello there! My name is Alessa from ALESSAPIRES, an online platform where I currently share the latest fashion trends, product reviews, personal recommendations on what to do as well as my travel adventures and other relevant interests that connects to my lifestyle and overall blog.

5 Easy Self Care Methods that have helped me stay productive during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

1) Setting Goals – I thrive on challenge and constantly set goals for myself every day – big or small, that way I can have something to strive toward.

2) Meditation – If you are fortunate enough to have some free time I highly suggest taking at least 10-30 minutes to just focus on your breath and yourself.

3) Skill/Hobby – Most of us tend to make excuses on why not to start, but now is the time to work on learning something new. January, I started yoga and it’s become a form of mediation for me as well as a great exercise.

4) Get Creative – I find that getting creative such as painting has helped cope with stressors. It’s also become a great pass time and you may discover abilities that you never knew you had.

5) House Revamp – I’m utilizing this time to catch up on organizing and cleaning those messy cabinet draws that I said I would clean out as well as my closets and other areas of my home.

These methods should motivate and occupy some of your time during this pandemic and hopefully, once this is done with — it’ll still remain staple in your routine.

6. SURAIA KHWAJA

Well here we are today in the middle of this pandemic. No one could ever imagine our lives would be like this and this would be our new way of living. I am so grateful for my personal development days and having the self care tools to navigate through this storm. I’m taking each day as it comes chilling, unwinding, relaxing, healing, growing and simply doing the things I love.

Below, I share the self care tips that bring me joy on a daily basis:

1) Meditation – My number one go-to when I’m feeling overwhelmed, anxious & stressed. It helps de-stress my mind and accept everything as it is. Meditation is presence, consciousness, me going within and being aware of my breath and thoughts without judgment of what comes up. When I meditate, I’m not living in the past and/or future. I am being in this present moment…trusting nature, trusting flow & trusting my own intuition.

2) Gratitude & Journaling- For 10 minutes upon waking up & before bed, I free write in a journal. Any thoughts, feelings, and ideas…whatever is on my mind, I grab a pen and put it down on paper. It’s powerful and feels good to write it out. I also take 5 minutes after my meditation every day and write in a gratitude journal. Practicing gratitude and appreciating everyone, everything and every blessing in my life continue to bring joy to my life…whereas before, I would feel scared, alone and in scarcity…today I feel brave, connected and abundant.

3) Taking a Mindful Walk & Being Outside – I love going for a walk outside especially on a beautiful sunny day. During my walk, I use a mindfulness technique to ground myself in the present moment. I admire the beauty of nature using my 5 senses of sight, hearing, feeling, smell & taste. Nowadays, right before the end of my walk as I’m about to reach my house, I walk backwards. When walking backwards, I reflect upon my life and how far I’ve come and that makes me feel really good.

4) Working out/ Running / Practicing Yoga – I love fitness, keeping myself in shape, getting my heart rate up and the afterglow and feeling after a great workout. Even on days when I’m feeling weak and low on energy, I motivate myself to get up, show up and MOVE my body as I know I always feel better after. I do 30-minute bodyweight workouts 3-5 times. I run outside 3 days a week for 15-20 mins while listening to my favorite music. Practicing yoga 2 times a week for 30 mins gives me that mind & body connection and makes me feel zen.

5) Listening to Podcasts & Motivational Speeches- Every day I strive to learn, grow and be the best version of myself. I like to listen to podcasts & motivation first thing in the morning as it sets the tone for the rest of my day. Motivational speeches make me feel really good, excited & empowered and like I can conquer the world. I have gained so much wisdom opening myself to learning. I am evolving as a person listening to motivation, inspiration, other’s life experiences & success stories.

As somebody who uses fitness to feel good and improve my life, I hope to inspire others to do the same through my presence on Instagram & Facebook. Through my fitness videos, I invite women to step outside of their comfort zone and remember they are strong, badass & capable of achieving ANYTHING.

Nice to see you ladies living your best life during the quarantine! I’ve been doing lots of long runs to maintain sanity. I’ve also cleaned out areas that I usually put off (fridge, freezer, spice cabinet). I hope to eventually get around to cleaning my Keds. Any tips for cleaning white canvas shoes?

I don’t have a tiktok account (#over40) but my 16 yo niece is a big fan. LOL! Maybe I’ll try it out!

Thank you!! That’s great, I know I’ve been doing a lot of organizing and cleaning up myself haha! Hmm for white canvas shoes, I usually get a towel and wet it with soap and water and clean it or I toss it in the washing machine…white shoes are tough though!

You should totally get on Tiktok it’s for any age range, many older people use it to promote their business, give tips, etc! Check it out 🙂 My handle is pearlsandplaces.
